Nurseries provide us with the opportunity to use poetic expression of the wonder of birth and the nurture of young live, sharing this experience with those nearest and dearest. Our aim is to have a dreamy room for the little one who is the latest member of the family. These spaces require a fair amount of practical space creation but the overall aim is to create an ambience that gives a sense of the joy and contentment. An important aspect is having the room feel a like a soothing nest that also has a magical twist or story to it. A romantic edge may come into the planning process as parents want to either recreate their own memories of their childhood or create what they wished their experience was. I adore this part of my role and being able to include character pieces that may have been saved or collected over the years or hunt out the perfect pieces to complete the picture.
In this room a vital element is the use of textures that give that “touchy feely” sense of comfort and interest. Incorporating height into what is often a smaller room in the house is very important. Time and again I have proven that by using good sized furniture and implementing interest and movement in the space above can in fact make the room feel much larger. This can be achieved in many ways inclusive of mobiles and lighting.
There are other important aspects in creating the ideal nursery that include the window treatments. We design these to be flexible to give options of sleep at different times of the day. There must also be a very comfy chair that allows mum and dad to enjoy cuddles and enjoy soothing times with their little one.
It is true that “sometimes it’s the smallest things that take up the most room in your heart”.
